A Tribute to the late Richard Orme Wilberforce, Baron Wilberforce, PC (1907-2003) - Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in the House of Lords from 1964 to 1982

Richard Wilberforce was the great-great-grandson of William Wilberforce, the famous abolitionist, and son of a judge of the Lahore High Court. He grew up in India and attended Winchester College and New College, Oxford, and was later elected a Fellow of All Souls College. He was called to the Bar in 1932 and became a Queen's Counsel in 1954.
He was first appointed to the bench in 1961 as a Chancery judge.

In 1964 he was appointed to the House of Lords as a Lord Appeal in Ordinary, made additionally a life peer as Baron Wilberforce, of the City and County of Kingston-upon-Hull. He is the only judge in recent times to have been appointed to the House of Lords straight from the High Court Bench, without serving in the Court of Appeal. His decisions were known for being reserved and cautious.

Property Slump and Credit Crunch Affect Jobs Market

A career in law used to be considered as safe as houses, but that was before the property slump. With the market for conveyancing now virtually nonexistent, newly qualified solicitors say they are finding it almost impossible to get jobs.

Some legal firms are letting staff go, and more redundancies are likely to follow, unless the property and construction industries make a comeback later this year. The decline in property-related legal work, both commercial and residential, means that redundancies are particularly accute in the field of conveyancing. Many new solicitors got jobs in conveyancing during the property boom, and obviously that’s dead and there’s no sign of it returning. Many solicitors who had been devoted entirely to conveyancing work will have little or nothing to do at the moment. When the market was booming, firms hired a huge amount of newly qualified solicitors, but that market is now nonexistent. There have been redundancies within legal firms. And there'll be more. Law firms have to be realistic if they haven’t got work for their staff.
